UK Gambling Industry Criticizes New Plans5 November 2004LONDON – As reported by Reuters: "Britain's gambling industry says the government has gone way too far in its plans to allow new Las Vegas-style casinos, and risks plunging the sector into crippling oversupply. "Prime Minister Tony Blair said this week that the first gambling reforms in 40 years could add 20 to 40 more casinos to the existing 120. "But existing UK players say that number is too high and the biggest beneficiaries of the Gambling Bill reforms will be the overseas players who have 5 billion pounds earmarked for investment. "'It's incredible they can produce a bill that upsets everybody,' said Warwick Bartlett of Global Gaming and Betting Consultants. "…British firms say the winners will be the companies with the most cash to invest, the overseas players, and the smaller domestic operators will be crowded out…" |
