UK Developer's Donation Investigated

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Scotsman: "An inquiry has been launched after a property developer donated £5,000 to a local Labour group weeks before being awarded a lucrative casino construction contract, it emerged today.

"Ask Property Developments donated £5,000 to the Manchester Central Constituency Labour Party only weeks before they won a contract for a £260m casino leisure complex in the east of the city.

"Local government watchdog, the Standards Board for England, has now launched an inquiry into the leader of the Labour Manchester City Council Richard Leese and deputy Jim Battle.

"…The probe follows a complaint by the leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition Simon Ashley.

"He does not allege the contract was awarded to Ask on any basis other than its merits.

"But he believes the councillors may have breached the town hall code of conduct by failing to declare the donation as an interest…"
