UF's Calathes cleared in online gambling incident

GAINESVILLE, Florida -- As reported by The Florida Times-Union: "A University of Florida investigation into online gambling by basketball player Nick Calathes determined that the sophomore point guard didn't break NCAA rules.

"A source close to the program said Friday the investigation revealed that Calathes ran up a significant debt playing online poker. Yahoo.com first reported the story and listed the debt as $600. The source, who requested anonymity because of student confidentiality concerns, was unsure about the total amount lost.

"UF athletic director Jeremy Foley released a statement saying the school was confident that Calathes or any other player didn't break NCAA rules.

"...NCAA rules prohibit athletes from providing information for gambling purposes or betting on any sports. If an athlete is found to have violated the organization's rules on gambling, they will be barred from the NCAA..."
