UAW file to represent Tropicana workers12 July 2007ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "The United Auto Workers union filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday to represent about 1,000 full- and part-time dealers, dual-rate dealers, and keno and simulcast employees at the Tropicana Casino and Resort. "This is the sixth casino at which the UAW has filed paperwork with the federal agency to unionize dealers — the precursor to setting an election date — though it is targeting all 11 properties here. The union requires pledge cards from at least 60 to 65 percent of employees before it takes that step. "The task of collecting a sufficient number of pledge cards lagged because employees were afraid of being fired, dealers said previously. Tropicana has been the site of mass layoffs since Columbia Sussex Corp. took over in January, a situation that dealers said created a tense, anxious work environment that drove them to seek job stability through the UAW..." copyrighted material written for and appeared exclusively in The Press of Atlantic City |
