U.K. Cities Fight for Super-Casino

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the London Evening Standard: "London is facing a battle with Manchester to be the home of a Las Vegas-style super-casino.

"The Evening Standard has learned the Government is set to use a loophole in the Gambling Act to increase the number of 24-hour betting complexes. The controversial-move emerged after the new owners of the ill-fated Millennium Dome unveiled plans for a giant leisure complex with space for a major casino at its heart. Before the election, Labour was forced to scale back plans for dozens of super-casinos to only one after a massive revolt.

"Blackpool is strongly tipped to be the first venue for the new breed of million-pound-jackpot resorts. But the Government is now set to argue that at least one other needs to built in order to meet its 'regulatory' requirement to assess the impact of a gambling revolution.

"…The development could see the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), which is planning the massive casino at the Dome, pitched against Malcolm Glazer, the new owner of Manchester United, for the city venue…"
