TV Mogul May Join Pennsylvania Casino Bidding

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Philadelphia Daily News: "Robert L. Johnson, the billionaire founder and CEO of Black Entertainment Television, may be joining the competition for a gambling franchise in Pennsylvania.

"Johnson visited Philadelphia two weeks ago for meetings with state legislators and businessmen, many of them intent on creating a consortium of African-Americans to seek a state gaming license if the Legislature legalizes slot machines.

"…State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams was one of four members of the Legislature's Black Caucus who met Johnson for breakfast at the Four Seasons.

"…'He made it very clear he would pursue the opportunity, based on the credibility of it being organized and being competitive in a way... that gave him a chance.'

"…Since selling the Black Entertainment Network to Viacom for roughly $3 billion in 2000, Johnson formed a holding company called the RLJ Cos., whose assets include an online lottery firm, operating in six Caribbean locations, including the U.S. Virgin Islands…"
