Turnout Brisk in Maine Election4 November 2003MAINE – As reported by the Associated Press: "Residents lined up even before the polls opened in Sanford, Maine, as residents across the state voted today on a $650 million casino along with other gambling, tax reform and borrowing proposals. "At the epicenter of the casino debate was Sanford, where the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes hope to build the casino in partnership with Las Vegas developer Anthony Marnell II. "…In Portland, lines formed shortly after some polling places opened at 7 a.m., and the casino seemed to be the top issue on voters' minds. "…If campaign spending was any measure of voter interest, it was extraordinarily high, at least in the casino question. Late campaign spending reports showed nearly $10 million -- a record in Maine -- had been spent by the two opposing sides. "On Monday, the pro-casino group Think About It dismissed a poll released during the weekend which suggested an erosion of support. "…Casinos No! spokesman Dennis Bailey said the momentum had shifted to his side. `I think it looks good for us,' Bailey said. "The steady stream of voters squared with Secretary of State Dan Gwadosky's prediction of a heavier-than-usual turnout for an election in which there are no statewide or federal offices at stake…" |
