Turning Stone ruling expected in June21 March 2007NEW YORK – As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: "The federal Department of Interior plans to rule by June 14 whether Turning Stone is legal - an announcement that has delighted those who have said for years the casino is operating illegally. "'It's about time,' said David Vickers, president of Upstate Citizens for Equality, which brought the lawsuit that led to the Interior Department's announcement. "If the Interior Department withdraws its approval of the 1993 agreement that allowed Turning Stone to open, the casino could be shut down. Three years ago, the National Indian Gaming Commission, which has the power to close Indian casinos, warned the Oneidas to resolve their differences with the state or risk unspecified 'enforcement action.' "An Interior lawyer last week sent letters to Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Oneida nation leader Ray Halbritter saying it would reconsider its 1993 approval of the agreement, or compact, that allowed Turning Stone to open…" |
