Tunica casinos hit by economic woes19 May 2008TUNICA, Mississippi -- As reported by the Mississippi Commercial Appeal: "Tunica, a county built on having the odds in its favor, is going through a rare rough stretch. "Gambling revenue and hotel occupancy, two crucial economic indicators, are down. "In the first three months of this year, revenues from gambling fell 5 percent -- down $22 million from where they were in 2007, according to reports by the Mississippi Gaming Commission. The number of people who visited casinos fell 6 percent. "...Tunica County, a place where 92 percent of the jobs are tourism-related, is feeling the effects of the economic downswing. The county, which gets 4 percent of casinos' gambling revenue, will see a $1.5 million to $3 million decrease this year, officials said. "...As more people watch their wallets and pocketbooks, casinos are having to spend more to lure them in..." |
