Trump tax appeal fuels matchup7 January 2008ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Six months before the mayoral primary, the stage is set for the city's first showdown. "The ongoing dispute regarding a $34 million tax-appeal settlement with Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. has become the first political sparring match between two city officials all but certain to run - City Council President William Marsh and Mayor Scott Evans. "Evans made headlines in December when he halted a $12 million payment to Trump as part of the tax settlement approved by City Council a month earlier, when Marsh was serving as acting mayor. "...A Tax Court judge later advised Evans and the city that withholding the money would open the city up to litigation and penalties, prompting officials to send it shortly afterward. But Evans got his message out: Taxpayer money will not be spent aimlessly, and he would battle anyone to protect it. It did not hurt that his opponent was corporate giant Donald Trump.
