Trump Lobbying Probe Ends In $250,000 Fine5 October 2000ALBANY, NEW YORK – Oct. 5, 2000-- A state investigation into possible lobbying violations by Donald Trump and an upstate anti-casino group would be settled by $250,000 in fines, according to published reports Thursday. "Under the tentative agreement with the state Lobbying Commission, Trump and others involved in an anti-casino ad campaign that the commission contended constituted lobbying would admit no wrongdoing. "…The settlement calls for Trump Hotel and Casino Resorts to pay $50,000; Trump lobbyist Roger Stone to pay $100,000; and the Institute for Law and Society, a Rome-based anti-casino group that produced the ads, to pay $100,000, the Times Union reported. "…The Lobbying Commission began looking into potential violations Trump and the institute may have made in not registering as lobbyists when it determined that some of the anti-casino ads constituted lobbying. The institute is opposed to a proposed St. Regis Mohawk gambling casino on the Monticello Raceway in the Catskills and was running ads linking the tribe to violent crimes. "Officials with the institute had maintained that it was `grassroots' organization, but in late August Trump's lawyer revealed that the billionaire developer was a major financial backer of the group and spent more than $150,000 for the ads. "…Trump, Stone and the institute also agreed to fully disclose lobbying expenditures to the commission…" |
