Tropicana lay-offs continue

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It hasn't been a smooth ride for hundreds of workers at Tropicana Casino and Resort since new owner Columbia Sussex Corp. took over in January. Just ask the limo drivers.

"In the latest round of layoffs shaking the Boardwalk casino, Tropicana has eliminated its limousine department, costing about 40 employees their jobs, one of the drivers said Wednesday.

"…Columbia has been slashing hundreds of jobs since it acquired Tropicana from Aztar Corp. on Jan. 3 in a $2.75 billion deal involving four casinos in Atlantic City, Nevada and Indiana. Tropicana's work force has shrunk from 4,507 employees on Jan. 2 to 3,846 on April 2, according to the most recent figures available from the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

"Tropicana spokeswoman Courtney Birmingham confirmed Wednesday that the limo department had been abolished, but she declined to divulge the number of employees who lost their jobs…"
