Tropicana Expansion to Open by Thanksgiving

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It boasts of upscale retailers, chic restaurants and trendy nightclubs all wrapped up in sizzling Latin-flavored architecture.

"But Tropicana Casino and Resort's new hotel, shopping and entertainment complex has been overshadowed by the deaths of four workers who were killed when a parking garage collapsed on Oct. 30, 2003, while under construction at the site.

"After months of speculation about the project's fate, Tropicana's parent company announced Thursday that the $280 million expansion will finally open by Thanksgiving Day - well off the original March 1, 2004, completion date.

"Paul E. Rubeli, chairman and chief executive officer of Aztar Corp., said the attraction will be comparable to the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace and the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian casino in Las Vegas.

"…Dubbed The Quarter, the expansion includes a 200,000-square-foot retail and entertainment complex reminiscent of the streets of Old Havana, Cuba. A new 502-room hotel tower and 2,400-space parking garage also are part of the project.

"…Tropicana's expansion is seen as key to transforming Atlantic City from a staid, daytripper market to a more upscale, overnight destination that offers visitors much more than just gambling. The billion-dollar Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Atlantic City's first Las Vegas-style megaresort, began the trend when it opened last year…"
