Tropicana awards over $271,000 in Bad Beat Jackpot

2 July 2013

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (PRESS RELEASE) -- On the first official summer weekend in Atlantic City, the Bad Beat Jackpot struck again at the Tropicana Poker Club.

On Saturday, June 22, at 2 p.m., the jackpot was triggered and nine players split a jackpot total of $271,681.51.

"The players were gathered around a $1-2 no limit table, with $435 in the center pot," said Steve Callender, general manager at Tropicana Atlantic City Casino & Resort. "John DiSantis was on the edge of his seat when he caught four nines on the river. What he didn't realize was that another player at the table, Carlo Valente, was sitting comfortably with an even better hand -- a nine high straight flush."

A "bad beat" occurs when a player with a strong poker hand that looks like a favorite to win loses to a player who ends up getting lucky and catching a hand ranked even higher. The Tropicana's Bad Beat Jackpot is a player-funded progressive jackpot that rewards the victim of a bad beat, so even a losing hand is a winner.

When the four nines held by John DiSantis lost to Carlo Valente's straight flush, the Bad Beat Jackpot was triggered and $271,681.51 was split among the nine players. John DiSantis, the lucky loser, pocketed $108,672.60. Carlo Valente scored $54,336.29. The remaining players at the table took home equal shares of $15,524.66.

"The Bad Beat Jackpot has been reset to $109,985.35," Callender said. "Join the action in the Tropicana Poker Room and you could be the next player to score a bad beat."
