Tribute, Reflection Follow Packer Death

AUSTRALIA -- As reported by the Age: "James Packer returned to work in a demonstration to the business world that he is ready and able to take over the considerable empire of his late father, Kerry.

"The future of the Packer business empire competed with reminiscence and reflection as the death of Australia's wealthiest man was headlined around the world.

"Mr Packer, 68, who died in Sydney on Boxing Day night, also earned praise from the man who helped keep him alive for much of the past decade.

"Cardiologist Dr Ian Bailey said Mr Packer's courage in the face of his impending death was matched by the difficulty his doctors experienced in managing the failing health of a man who refused to slow down.

"'When I first met him, he said: 'Son, there's two things you'll have to learn about me: one, I'm hard to kill, and number two, I'm a gambler, and I'll usually win'.'

"At home, financial markets reacted with caution after it was feared Mr Packer's death could spark a sell-off in his flagship company, Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL).

"...In financial and sporting centres around the world, Mr Packer's death was recorded with a mixture of anecdote, respect and admiration.

"In Britain, the national press remembered him as the man who revolutionised world cricket, who dominated the Australian media, and who loved a bet..."
