Tribe's Decision Could Change Gambling in Connecticut

DANBURY, Connecticut – As reported by the Connecticut News-Times: "A year after a federal ruling hurt the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation's plans to earn recognition and build a casino, the government will release a new decision that could 'set the direction for western Connecticut,' said Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton.

"On Thursday, the Bureau of Indian Affairs will make public its decision on whether to recognize the Kent-based tribe. The bureau released a preliminary decision to reject the tribe's recognition bid last year, and the tribe has since responded by altering its application and its roster.

"The decision is important to the region because the Schaghticokes named Danbury as a possible site for a casino two years ago. Local officials fear gambling would usher increased crime, traffic and bankruptcies.

"…Should the tribe win recognition, Boughton said the city, and likely others in Western Connecticut would appeal to the Interior Bureau of Indian Appeals.

"For the 200-member tribe, Thursday's decision is the culmination of decades of research and waiting. Tribe members are feeling anxiety as Jan. 29 grows closer, said Chief Richard Velky, regardless of his sense that the tribe's application is strong.

"…Should the tribe win recognition and the city appeal, Velky said, he does not fear a city appeal should the tribe win recognition…"
