Tribe Wants to Negotiate New Casino Deal3 November 2003Monticello, New York -- As reported by the Times Herald-Record: ``The long and winding road to a Catskills casino just grew another curve. ``The St. Regis Mohawks want to renegotiate the compact with New York state that would bring a casino to Kutsher's Sports Academy. But both the tribe's new chiefs and Gov. Pataki stressed they still want to do a new version of the deal tentatively reached in May. ``That agreement not only included the terms for the Sullivan casino – and a revenue-sharing deal for slots at the tribe's upstate casino – but also settled the Mohawks' land claim against the state and resolved the dispute over taxation of tribal gas and cigarettes. `` The new chiefs, elected in June, want to negotiate the issues separately. ``Pataki's office had said it wouldn't do a casino deal unless the land claim was settled…" |
