Tribe Seeks Review of Existing Rhode Island Gambling

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- As reported by the Associated Press: "The Narragansett Indian tribe on Tuesday said it asked Attorney General Patrick Lynch to review the legality of gambling at Newport Grand and Lincoln Park.

"Lincoln Park has slots and a dog track while Newport Grand is a former Jai Alai venue that now has slots.

"The move comes days after a Superior Court judge barred a casino question proposed by the tribe and Harrah's Entertainment Inc. from appearing on the November ballot. The judge said the question would most likely be declared unconstitutional if passed, as the Rhode Island Constitution says all lotteries need to be operated by the state.

"The Narragansetts had partnered with Harrah's to build a casino in West Warwick. The ballot question was part of legislation passed by the General Assembly last month over Gov. Don Carcieri's veto..."
