Tribe Says Casino Investment Scheme is Scam

SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the San Diego Union Tribune: "Investors from coast to coast are being asked to put up millions of dollars for a new Indian casino in Los Angeles County, a project the tribe involved says is bogus.

"Documents mailed to prospective investors say the project will be developed in a partnership with the Shasta Nation, a loosely organized band of 1,500 members based in Yreka, more than 600 miles north of Los Angeles.

"It's doubtful, however, that the Shasta Nation could develop a casino in Los Angeles County even if it wanted to, which it doesn't, according to tribal leaders. The Shasta Nation is not a federally recognized tribe, a basic requirement to conduct gaming.

"…The solicitations have come from a Los Angeles man, Tom Kelly, who apparently operates a number of investment funds from a Santa Monica Boulevard office.

"…'We can't build a casino until we get federally recognized,' Shasta Nation tribal Chairman Roy Hall Jr. said. 'We have no idea what this guy is up to.'…"
