Tribe Offers Land for Casino

NEW YORK – As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: "Leaders of the Seneca-Cayugas of Oklahoma went to Albany this week to press an offer to settle their share of the Cayuga Indian land claim in exchange for state approval to build a casino in the Catskills or Rochester.

"Representatives from the Oklahoma-based tribe met this week with Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, R-Brunswick, and Sen. Michael F. Nozzolio, R-Fayette, who represents the land claim area, along with Sen. William Larkin Jr. and Assemblyman Alexander J. Gromack.

"…The Seneca-Cayuga proposal shares similarities with an offer made last fall by the Cayuga Indian Nation. Both tribes are suing the state over former reservation land near the north end of Cayuga Lake they say was illegally taken.

"In their meeting with Gromack, the Seneca-Cayugas floated a proposal to run a casino with video lottery terminals and board games but no slot machines, said Charles Carrier, an Assembly spokesman.
