Tribal casino grant applications available

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the Sierra Star: "Applications are available for $1 million in grant money for local agencies, schools and nonprofit organizations.

"The money comes from the Community Grant Program, established last February as part of a $12.55 million settlement between Madera County and the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians.

"The settlement ended four lawsuits and a three-year dispute over taxes and jurisdiction between the two entities, and it cleared the way for the Chukchansi Gold Casino to continue its expansion.

"...The agreement included a one-time payment to the county of $2.55 million, with $800,000 earmarked for the county general fund and an additional $750,000 for the Yosemite Unified School District. A trust account was set up for $1 million in grants to be paid to qualified local applicants each year for 10 years.

"This is the second year of the grant program..."
