Tribal casino games may change12 December 2006UNITED STATES – As reported by the Baraboo News Republic: "Some slot machines and other games played in Native American casinos across the country could be removed if a federal oversight agency has its way. Members of the National Indian Gaming Commission are considering an overhaul of 'Class II' games, and Native American tribes are not excited about the prospect of giving up some games currently allowed in casinos. "Ho-Chunk Nation spokesperson Katie Matha said the law could affect bingo, poker rooms and some slot machines at the Nation's various casinos and gaming facilities, including the large Ho-Chunk Casino north of Baraboo. She said the entire operation at the Nation's De Jope gaming facility in Madison is comprised of Class II machines. "…The proposed changes come on the heels of a half-dozen appeals court cases lost by the U.S. Justice Department in which government lawyers argued that Class II machines - which allow players to participate in a national network of bingo machines and high-stake payouts - are really Class III, Las Vegas-style slot machines. "The NIGC's proposed regulatory changes reflect an ongoing jurisdictional conflict between tribes and state officials who each seek greater control of gambling…" |
