Treasury's Gambling Ways Criticised

VICTORIA, Australia -- As reported by the Age: "Gambling revenue will pour more than $1.5 billion into Treasury coffers next year — despite the state budget containing no initiatives for problem gamblers.

"Poker machines will contribute the bulk of state gambling taxes, providing the Government with more than $1 billion of revenue in 2006-07.

"Cash from fees and fines will also help finance Labor's pre-election splurge, with revenue expected to leap almost 13 per cent to $832 million in the coming year.

"...But with the figures showing electronic gaming revenue continuing to rise, Victoria's welfare sector lashed out at the Government's reliance on gambling taxes..."
