Treasure Bay Won't Have to Lower Mast21 November 2003BILOXI, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "The Treasure Bay Casino will not have to lower the mast of its pirate ship if the gambling barge is moved into a man-made basin. "The Biloxi Planning Commission approved a height variance for the casino Thursday, allowing the mast to remain 218 feet above sea level. "Biloxi recently adopted an air safety navigation ordinance to protect the flying mission at Keesler Air Force Base. The ordinance established a 140 foot height limit on structures within Keesler's flight path. The restrictions do not apply to the casino barge at its present location because it was built years before the ordinance was passed. "…The height restrictions have caused problems for at least two high-rise condominium developments this year, which were denied height variances because city leaders feared the buildings would make Keesler vulnerable to future military base closings…" |
