Tourist From Oregon Stabbed on the Strip

LAS VEGAS -- As reported by the Review-Journal: ``A 24-year-old tourist from Oregon was stabbed early Friday in what Las Vegas police described as a random attack near the Stratosphere.

``Rick Plummer, a spokesman at University Medical Center, said the victim was stabbed once in the side and was in serious condition Friday afternoon. Authorities would not release her name.

``Marcos Franco, 35, was arrested after the incident on a charge of attempted murder. His arrest followed a six-hour standoff with police.

``Sgt. Rick Barela said the tourist was entering a cab with three friends around 1:30 a.m. when a man approached her from behind, uttered an obscenity and stabbed her.

``...Barela said neither the victim nor her friends had seen the man before. The spokesman called the attack "completely unprovoked."

``...Barela said Franco has two felony convictions in Nevada: one in 1994 for possession of a controlled substance and a theft-related conviction from 1999..."
