Toronto doctors look for ways to cure adolescent addiction

TORONTO, Canada -- As reported by the Toronto Globe and Mail: "The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is Canada's first holistic clinic designed to treat addiction to video games, gambling and the Internet.

"The Adolescent Clinical Education Service (ACES) was launched last month in hopes of modernizing youth addiction treatment.

"All patients are between the ages of 16 and 24. ACES seeks to cure addiction by acknowledging that the Internet, gambling and video games can be an escape route for young people battling more serious issues.

"'We started getting tons of calls [from parents complaining] about Internet use and we got tired of saying, 'Oh we don't deal with that,' " said clinical head Dr. Bruce Ballon. 'Instead, we said, 'Let's deal with it,' because it's just another manifestation or coping mechanism or strategy to deal with other issues...'"
