Ties to Gambling Haunting 'Famous' Dave

WASHINGTON – As reported by the Times Record News: ```Famous' Dave Anderson made it clear when he became head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) that he would recuse himself from all decisions relating to his former business partner, gambling entrepreneur Lyle Berman.

``But Anderson's recent decision to step aside from all gambling issues is not playing well on Capitol Hill, where there have been several calls for his resignation.

``At least three senators, including Mark Dayton, D-Minn., and Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo. - the only Indian in the Senate - have questioned why Anderson, of Edina, Minn., took the top BIA job if he was going to remove himself from all casino matters, the BIA's most high-profile work.

``Anderson, founder of the barbecue chain that bears his name, says there's plenty left for him to do in fostering his bootstrap vision of self-help, economic development, health and education on the nation's Indian reservations.

``…But some observers say that with Congress beginning a new inquiry into the influence of non-Indian casino investors, Anderson's recusal could not have come at a more awkward time…"
