Thunder Valley Casino Legal Challenged Hearing Scheduled24 January 2006CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Sacramento Bee: "A complicated legal challenge by seven former employees of Placer County's Thunder Valley Casino - alleging sexual harassment and age and sex discrimination - is scheduled for its next hearing Feb. 28. "The civil suit, filed a year ago, pits individual workers' rights against an Indian tribe's status as a sovereign nation. The plaintiffs, all women, say that their civil rights were violated and that the tribe's casino failed to create a system to protect those rights. "The seven worked at a variety of jobs at Thunder Valley, and the suit covers a range of employment issues, from sexual assault by a supervisor to age bias. "In November, a Placer Superior Court commissioner ruled that neither the casino nor its owner, United Auburn Indian Community, could be sued for violations of state and federal civil rights laws because the tribe is a sovereign nation…" |
