Three New Checkpoints Credited with Easing Vegas Airport Congestion

LAS VEGAS -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``Opening three new security checkpoints eased travel at McCarran International Airport during the Independence Day holiday, an airport official said Monday.

``…Two new security portals, at the airport's C gates, were created for passengers on Southwest Airlines the Las Vegas airport's busiest carrier. Southwest handles about 170 of the airport's 423 departing flights a day.

``It was unclear how many people were aware of the new checkpoints, which are not on the same route as checkpoints leading to the airport's other three gate complexes.

``Reaching the two new Southwest checkpoints requires passengers to walk outdoors for about the length of a football field.

``The other new checkpoint is a special-needs lane at the D gates, which Millet said eases congestion for travelers in wheelchairs and strollers. Airline and airport employees were also being encouraged to use the new lane.

``The three new checkpoints bring to 21 the number at the airport, which handles about 35 million people a year and ranks as the nation's seventh-busiest….”
