This Week in Gambling: Las Vegas casinos opening without restrictions

11 May 2021

In gambling news this week, some Las Vegas casinos are being allowed to open at full capacity with no coronavirus restrictions or social distancing. And Nevada is not alone, as other states throw open the doors as well. Plus, online gambling may soon be expanding in a big way.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has allowed several Las Vegas casinos to begin opening without social distancing restrictions. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Encore Resort, and Wynn Las Vegas to begin operating at full capacity this week. All three properties met the Board’s conditions to open at 100% by having at least 60% of their employees vaccinated.

Additionally, the properties can now remove any restrictions, such as plastic barriers between games and at gaming tables, which were in place for social distancing. Cosmopolitan CEO William McBeath stated that the “…only clear path to normalcy and bringing our entire workforce back is through vaccinations”, adding that immunizations are the key to success for the entire gaming industry. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak also chimed in on the achievement, giving thanks for the partnership within the gaming industry to make certain casino workers and their families received the vaccine.

Not only that, but Nevada online gambling may actually expand to allow casino games... not just poker and sports betting. Even though the state is almost synonymous with gambling, Nevada online gambling is a bit behind other states. The Gaming Control Board is set for a hearing on 13 May, and discussion is set to include the expansion of internet betting. That expansion could remove current restrictions and pave the way for ‘peer-to-peer’ and ‘non peer-to-peer’ gaming.
