Third annual Spartan Alliance Weekend at Scarlet Pearl Casino

26 September 2019

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort will host the 3rd Annual Spartan Weekend, a Spartan Alliance Independence Corps Initiative, 26-29 September. Spartan Alliance’s goal is to improve the lives of severely injured veterans and their families.

Spartan Weekend is a support event where veterans, firefighters and other first responders rebuild the camaraderie they had in the military with a mini golf tournament, Veterans Resource Expo, group art therapy and other fun activities. The Mobility Program provides disabled Veterans the ability to easily enjoy the outdoors through all-terrain wheelchairs.

This year’s Spartan Weekend Scarlet Pearl Chair will be presented to Biloxi paralyzed Veterans Association President Cheryl Lewis RN BSN MS. Lewis served in the U.S. Army as a Field Combat Medic from 1980 to 1987. In 1982, she had a back injury during a training mission. Cheryl continued in her unit’s mission training after a short recuperation. In 1986, on another training mission, Cheryl re-injured her back, but this time it was much more severe. Her injury is known as an incomplete fracture, which means she still has use of her arms and legs, but it left her confined to a wheelchair, medically separated from service.

After getting her education in nursing, Cheryl went to work for the Veterans Administration in Biloxi. Cheryl held many different positions there, but the two that she is most proud of are Nurse Discharge coordinator and Supervisor of Veteran transport. She was directly trusted to ensure our veterans made it to their various appointments both in and out of state.

On Thursday, 26 September, attendees will meet and greet before the Raising of the Flag at 6 p.m. by the Garden Oasis pool. Following that, participants will be treated to a dinner at Waterfront Buffet.

The weekend’s events will include the Warfighter Gala, and musical entertainment.

Visit Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort’s Facebook page to follow the “Scarlet Pearl Cares” initiative — working to strengthen and make a difference in the community we call home. The next event is the Pink Pearls to Save the Girls Fashion Show, a benefit for Susan G. Komen, which supports preventing and curing breast cancer. The show is at 8 p.m. in the Strand Event Center. Tickets are $50/each or $200 for a half table (5 seats) and may be purchased online.
