The Reel Life: Rare art edition

17 January 2013

The Reel Life likes donate to charity. After spending hours playing the online slots, it feels good to give back to society. But when the Reel Life donates to charity, it's clothes and food and shoes -- not rare paintings.

According to a Yahoo! News story, someone dropped off a Giovanni Battista Torriglia painting worth between $12,000 and $18,000 in one of its donation bins.

The Reel Life is guessing the owner of this painting had no idea how valuable it was. But a Goodwill employee thought it might be valuable and set it aside. Goodwill is now auctioning off the painting to raise money for its job-training program.

According to the story, this isn't the first time Goodwill has accidentally (presumably) ended up with a famous piece of art. Last year, a Seattle Goodwill location found a sketch by Salvador Dali at a donation center.

There's an important lesson here. And it's not that Goodwill is really good at spotting valuable art. It's that the next time you donate something to charity, double-check to make sure you're not giving away something valuable. There's nothing wrong with giving away something valuable. But you'll feel a whole lot better about yourself if you did it on purpose.
