The Reel Life: Hostage status updates edition23 June 2011The Reel Life is constantly on Facebook, especially when we're playing online slots. Let's just say our status updates are a little less exciting than those that come during a hostage situation. According to Gawker, a man who held a woman hostage at a Utah hotel for over 16 hours found time to update his Facebook about his situation. Jason Valdez's first update read: "I'm currently in a stand off wit these shady azz n***** from old, kinda ugly but ready for whatever, I love u guyz and if I don't make it out of here alive that I'm in a better place and u were all great friends…." He added 15 friends, made six status updates and responded to numerous comments made by family and friends who urged him to surrender to police. Some friends also provided him with updates on police activities outside the hotel. Valdez even uploaded a photo with himself and a woman with the caption, "Got a cute 'HOSTAGE,' huh?" Valdez issued his final update at 9:25 a.m., which read, "Well i was lettin this girl go but these dumb bastards made an attempt to come in after i told them not to, so i popped off a couple more shots and now were startin all over again it seems." When SWAT teams burst into the room where Valdez and the hostage were holed up, he shot himself in the chest. He is in critical condition but is expected to survive. His hostage was unharmed. Unfortunately for Valdez and his friends and family, his Facebook privacy settings were set to public, and therefore people have been having a field day on his wall. So let that be a lesson to all you hostage takers out there. If you feel the need to post status updates while in the middle of your crisis, make sure your settings are set to private. Get in the fast lane grandma, the Bingo game is ready to roll! Hittin' the books A middle-aged father who won a $128,734 jackpot at Slotland last week says he’ll use his winnings to pay for his daughter’s college education. The player, who’s been playing online slot machines at Slotland for about a year, won the massive payout playing the new Witch’s Brew online slot machine. “My daughter is just starting college and my wife and I were worried about how we’d be able to pay for it all,” said the jackpot winner, known as RMP1956 at the popular online casino. “Education is important but it’s so expensive these days! Well, I guess that’s one thing we won’t have to worry about any more!” Witch's Brew is a single-payline slot machine where players watch the Witch's magic boil right in front of them. Players can bet as little as $0.50 or as much as $4.00 to see what she has in store. During the game, pots of jam fill up and boil over. Hidden witches activate Wild symbols according to the flavor of the overflowing jam. Boiling jam pots can activate more than one Wild symbol, increasing chances of spinning a winning combination even more. Three Wild Pumpkins wins the progressive jackpot. “Slotland is one of the few online casinos that I trust. I really enjoy the games -- they’re fun and easy to understand. This Witch’s Brew, it’s really something. I had actually never tried it until the night I hit the jackpot on it!” said the winner. “I love watching the cauldrons boiling over, especially when I get them all going and I can play with all seven Wild symbols active. I also love the little animated black cat that meows every once in awhile. Not to mention a six-figure pay out is pretty darn good too!”
