In Thailand, it is apparently illegal to possess "too many" decks of playing cards.

At least, that is what a group of elderly bridge players was told this week when the 32 foreigners were arrested in an anti-gambling raid on their Thai resort town of Pattaya.

The bridge players were held in custody for 12 hours, before finally being released.

Despite the fact that the bridge players were not even playing for money, they had supposedly broken a 1935 law, the Playing Cards Act, which prohibits individuals from possessing more than 120 playing cards.

And what an interesting number to pick — 120. Two decks equals 104 cards. Three decks is 156. Were Thai legislators in 1935 worried about rogue gamblers running around with slightly less than 2 1/3 decks of cards?
