The Commodores to visit Cannery Casino Hotel26 April 2017(PRESS RELEASE) -- Motown supergroup The Commodores will bring its top funk and soul hits to Cannery Casino and Hotel's The Club on Saturday, 10 June. Formed in 1968, The Commodores began as a group of seven Tuskegee University students coming together to perform funk and soul music throughout Alabama. Their star began to rise as they moved out of state and landed gigs in New York City, catching the eye of Jackson 5, who asked The Commodores to open for them. Motown took notice of the group's talents, quality performances and increasing popularity, and gave them a record deal. The Commodores released their first Motown single "Machine Gun," which became a top 10 hit and garnered national attention. The septet went on to release a series of chart-topping hits, including "Brick House," "Easy," "Three Times A Lady," "Sail On" and "Too Hot ta Trot." After group member Lionel Richie left to pursue a solo career in 1982, J.D. Nicholas joined The Commodores and helped the group produce some of their greatest hits. In 1986, The Commodores won their first Grammy Award for their #1 single "Nightshift." The group also sold more than 60 million records for Motown. With seven #1 hits, multiple top 10 singles and 50 albums to their name, The Commodores have enjoyed major success within the music industry. The group now works under their own record label, Commodores Records and Entertainment, and continues to win over fans with their soulful music and outstanding performances. The group's lineup features original members William King and Walter "Clyde" Orange, as well as 1982 addition J.D. Nicholas.
