Thais Visit Cambodian Casinos for New Years

CAMBODIA – As reported by the MCOT News: "The government has been urging Thais to treat the Songkran New Year festival as a time for religious merit-making, but for some Thais, the extended holidays are an excuse to nip across the Cambodian border for a spot of one of the oldest vices: gambling.

"Reporters based in the border province of Sa Kaew this morning spoke of Thai gamblers queuing to cross over into Cambodia as soon as the border checkpoint opened at 07.00hrs despite the tight security checks of local immigration officials.

"…Pol. Lt. Col. Niruti Ruengjintana, deputy superintendent of the Aranya Prathet immigration office, said that he expected around 5,000 Thais to cross over into the Cambodian border town of Poi Pet this morning, and that more were likely to follow in the afternoon…"
