Thailand to Hold Casino Referendum28 November 2003THAILAND – As reported by the Bangkok Post: "The government will hold a referendum to test public sentiment on legalising casinos and will shelve the plan if support is low, said Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. "Opposition to the legalisation of casinos was just a whisper, but the public should be consulted, Mr Thaskin said. "…The prime minister was mulling over having the private sector invest in entertainment complexes. "…He denied people could end up obsessed with gambling if it was legalised, saying most gamblers visited casinos not to make money, but for enjoyment. "…Mr Thaksin said the government would stop pushing for legal casinos if people rejected them in the referendum…" |
