Thai Villagers Oppose Casino

THAILAND – As reported by the Bangkok Post: "Villagers in Si Sa Ket are opposing the opening of a new crossing on the Cambodian border, amid plans by Phnom Penh to build a five-star resort and casino in the area.

"Border development coordination chief Thiwa Rungkaew said many local residents felt it was better not to open Chong Ta Thao pass, which they feared would be a magnet for gamblers.

"…Mr Thiwa said the pass would benefit neither trade nor tourism.

"…Cambodian authorities had already laid a road link to Chong Ta Thao pass and were currently developing more than 1,000 rai of nearby land in preparation for construction of the casino…"
