Thai Protest To Cambodia Over Gambling Case25 January 2005THAILAND -- As reported by the Bangkok Post: "Thailand has protested to Cambodia that court proceedings were launched against six Thai gamblers charged with stealing 90 million baht from a Poipet casino without giving prior notice to the embassy in Phnom Penh. "But the Thai ambassador to Cambodia Piyawat Niyomrerks, had a tough time yesterday getting someone senior to listen to him. "…Finally the second Deputy Foreign Minister Huy Cantol Vora received Mr Piyawat's call, which came with a 'letter of concern' that Saturday's court hearing had prevented the six suspects from receiving the assistance they were entitled to as Thai nationals. The embassy was unable to provide them with an interpreter and lawyers, as was their right.
