Thai PM Drops Lottery Idea2 June 2004THAILAND – As reported by the Bangkok Post: "Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra seems to have backed off from his plan for a special lottery to fund the purchase of a 30% stake in English football club Liverpool amid strong opposition to it. "A Government House source said Mr Thaksin told the cabinet yesterday that a stand-off between the government and the growing number of opponents to the lottery was unnecessary. "His remarks came after his mentor Gen Chamlong Srimuang, the former Palang Dharma party leader, and social critic Dr Prawase Wasi voiced strong opposition to the Liverpool share purchase, particularly the special lottery.Mr Thaksin, however, said the planned share purchase was still on but a way would be found to raise funds from the private sector. "…Earlier, government spokesman Jakrapob Penkair said Mr Thaksin told the cabinet he earlier opted for the special lottery because he wanted the public to have fun, but if they did not like it he had no problem with that…" |
