Texas Slot Bill Dead

AUSTIN, Texas – As reported by the Brownsville Herald: "Gambling interests have spent millions on top lobbyists trying to bring slot machines to Texas racetracks.

"Early Thursday morning, their efforts were killed by a lady with pink tennis shoes.

"When the Texas Senate started debating bills on the evening calendar, state Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, plopped her bright pink tennis shoes on top of her desk on the Senate floor to show she was ready to stand indefinitely and filibuster to defeat slot machines.

"She never had to put them on.

"Just before 2 a.m., the Senate began considering a bill that would reorganize the way the Texas Lottery Commission does business.

"A few minutes later, state Sen. Ken Armbrister, D-Victoria, began introducing his attempt to legalize video lottery terminals, or VLTs, by saying he had a 'small amendment that will bring in billions of dollars to the state of Texas.'

"Nelson immediately objected to continuing debate on the basis of a Senate rule that required debate on the bill to stop at midnight on Wednesday.

"…With that, the VLTs all but died…"
