Texas Slot Bill Dead

AUSTIN, Texas – As reported by the Dallas Morning News: "Forget about hearing the 'ka-ching' of slot machines in Texas this year.

"That's the prediction of most gambling supporters, beaten back by opposition from a coalition of conservative Republicans and anti-gaming Democrats.

"With three weeks before adjournment, 'it's dead as far as I'm concerned,' said Rep. Allen Ritter, a Nederland Democrat involved in crafting the bill that sought to legalize casinos and slot machines at racetracks.

"Gambling supporters had hoped to make inroads this time, saying that gambling revenues would help the cash-hungry state. But their efforts have failed in several recent votes.

"Last week, the House overwhelmingly rejected proposals to permit Internet sales of lottery tickets and poker games at bingo rooms. Although some leaders said a slot-machine vote might be different, they noted the gambling foes' passionate arguments.

"…The House will consider one possible companion today. Up for debate: a bill to continue the functions of the Texas Lottery Commission, which could oversee the operation of slot machines if they are considered part of the lottery.

"Tuesday night, the Senate rejected an amendment to a school finance bill that would have permitted slot machines at racetracks and Indian lands. Its author, Sen. Mario Gallegos, said that would raise as much as $2 billion for education and other services.

"Mr. Gallegos, D-Houston, said Wednesday that he was baffled by lawmakers' stance because polls have shown that most Texans support legalizing the devices.
