Texas Senator Says No to Gambling

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – As reported by the Texas Star-Telegram: "Texas Republicans wrapped up their three-day state convention Saturday with speeches and demonstrations designed to highlight party unity, but one high-profile GOP official offered a preview of two potential sources of friction for the 2006 election cycle.

"And convention-goers adjourned with a fond remembrance of former President Ronald Reagan, who died Saturday.

"U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who has not ruled out a run for governor in two years, strayed slightly from her prepared remarks to the almost 15,000 delegates and alternates to spotlight a key division between herself and the incumbent governor, Rick Perry. And she invoked the Texas legacy of President Bush to make her point.

"'Moral values should be uplifted. Governor Bush fought gambling in this state, and so will I,' Hutchison told the party faithful assembled in San Antonio's Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

"The remark was an apparent jab at Perry, who has proposed legalizing video slot machines at racetracks and Indian reservations to help pay for public education.

"…The gambling stance puts Texas' senior senator squarely in the camp of the party's platform, which was adopted Friday…"
