Texas Senator Proposes Gambling29 April 2004AUSTIN, Texas – As reported by the Brownsville Herald: "State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. says he is not a gambling man. "'But, I bet that a casino on South Padre Island would bring so many jobs, tourists and economic development throughout the Rio Grande Valley,' the Brownsville Democrat said Wednesday. "And if he garners support from both the community and colleagues in the Legislature, Lucio plans to propose legislation during the ongoing special session that would call for a constitutional amendment allowing casino gambling on South Padre Island. "…Legislators supporting island gambling point to millions of dollars that leave Texas to neighboring states where gambling is allowed, including Louisiana, New Mexico and Nevada. "South Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. is also in favor of one casino on the Island and a local option election to decide the issue, especially if the casino would bring other amenities such as upscale shopping to support it. But he supports only one gambling venue…" |
