Texas pro-casino side regroups5 June 2007TEXAS -- As reported by the El Paso Times: "Tigua tribal leaders and El Paso legislators are regrouping after efforts to allow gambling to resume at the Tigua's Speaking Rock Casino failed this Legislative session. "Proponents of gambling on the reservation are pressing ahead despite a near-win this spring in Austin that would have allowed gambling to resume after operations were shut down in 2002. "...State Rep. Norma Chávez rallied hard for the Native American tribe and proposed several bills aimed at resuming gambling on the reservation. She said said she and the Tiguas used a three-pronged approach to resuming gambling at the Tigua's Speaking Rock Casino. Chávez sought a constitutional amendment for gambling on Indian Reservations, which would require approval from voters. "She also sought legislation that would prevent prosecution of people gambling on Indian reservations and a measure that would allow charity bingo games on reservations. "To the chagrin of Chávez, none of those efforts passed. She said the defeat of legislation to allow gambling at Speaking Rock Casino partly stemmed from opposition from religious groups and from Las Vegas and Louisiana lobbies..." |
