Texas Poker Ring Busted

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – As reported by the Brownsville Herald: "A framed newspaper article on the wall of B-N-B Poker Supply said state Attorney General Greg Abbott ruled that poker tournaments are legal in Texas as long as players don't risk money for a prize.

"But police said the clip was part of an attempt to make illegal activities at the alleged gambling den sound legitimate.

"Brownsville Police Chief Carlos Garcia said patrons at the popular night spot would pay $5 an hour to enter into tournaments where they could win or lose money, violating state gambling laws.

"As part of the first raid of an illegal poker den in city history, Brownsville police arrested five men, one woman and gave 11 patrons tickets at the business on 815 Paredes Line Road Tuesday evening.

"…Investigators said B-N-B Poker Supply had opened in July. Garcia, however, said it had already been the subject of an undercover investigation after police learned that it allowed illegal tournaments.

"Investigators believe the men made between $5,000 and $10,000 a night, police said…"
