Texas Governor: Legalizing VLTs Won't Expand Gaming

AUSTIN, Texas – As reported by the El Paso Times: "Legalizing slot-machine-type gambling won't expand gaming in Texas because 100,000 eight-liner machines are already in play, Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday.

"Perry wants Texans to legalize video lottery terminals, or slot machines, at the state's racetracks and on Indian reservations to help pay for public education. The governor's plan projects video lottery terminals could generate $800 million a year for the state.

"El Paso's Tigua Indians support the plan, which would allow them to return slot machines to Speaking Rock Casino, which they shut down two years ago under federal court order.

"…Perry opposed efforts last year to legalize Indian gaming because he opposed any expansion of gambling.

"Legalizing the slot machines would not expand gambling, he said.

"…Anti-gambling groups are uniting today to blast the idea…"
