Texas gaming bill approved

24 May 2007

AUSTIN, Texas -- As reported by the El Paso Times: "The Tigua tribe in El Paso would be able to raise money from charitable bingo games on its reservation under a bill the Texas Senate approved Wednesday.

"The Tiguas came into the legislative session hoping lawmakers would allow them to resume gambling at Speaking Rock Casino, but tribal Gov. Art Senclair said bingo was a good start.

"...State Rep. Norma Chávez, D-El Paso, asked state Sen. Kip Averitt, R-Waco, to put the tribal bingo measure on a bill that would allow charities to award bigger jackpots in bingo games.

"Senators approved the bill 26-5.

"...The bingo bill has passed the House, but now that chamber must decide whether to accept changes made in the Senate before sending the measure to Gov. Rick Perry."
