Texas Developers Planning Casino Resort25 November 2003SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – As reported by the Brownsville Herald: "Community Planning Associates would like to bet that a casino would prosper on South Padre Island. "The Austin-based developers hope to establish a casino-anchored destination resort and a world-class aquarium at Isla Blanca Park. "They say the $300 million project would be a boon to the local economy, generating more than $20 million a year in new tax revenues for area schools. It would also create at least 2,200 new jobs ranging in pay from $9 an hour to $90 an hour plus benefits and about 1,400 `trickle-down' jobs, they claim. "However, current Texas law does not permit onshore casinos, except for those operated by Native Americans. "As a result, the group plans to present their idea during next year's special session of the Texas Legislature. If the legislature addresses the issue, Texas voters could decide in November 2004 whether or not to allow casino gambling in the state. "…The resort would take up 160 acres at Isla Blanca Park on the southern tip of South Padre Island and would include a casino, a world-class aquarium and the Seaport Village Marina…" |
