Texas Casino Supporters Optimistic About Plans

TEXAS – As reported by the Midland Reporter Telegram: "Two key players in Stanton's proposed $300 million Las Vegas-style West Texas Oasis casino-hotel-RV park visited Midland Wednesday to tout its economic benefits and say it has burgeoning statewide support.

"Austin developer Barry Keenan and public relations consultant Robert Cox told the Reporter-Telegram editorial board polls indicate a constitutional amendment to create a Texas Gaming Commission and allow 12 casinos in the state would pass by 60 percent.

"State Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, has introduced a resolution to put the amendment on the Nov. 1 ballot with Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, to follow suit in their 'Let the Voters Decide' campaign.

"…[Keenan] Community Planning Associates plan casinos at Stanton and Tulia and in all major metropolitan areas of the state, requiring at least 51 percent Texas ownership and in some locations expecting 100-percent in-state ownership.

"…Though the Texas Constitution requires two-third majorities in the Austin House and Senate to proffer an amendment to statewide voters, Keenan and Cox believe the state's ongoing budgetary woes give impetus to their plan…"
